About Us

Founded in 1987, the Department of Applied Mathematics offers programs leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Department consists of 18 full-time faculty members (4 Assistant, 1 Associate, and 13 full professors) and is divided into three divisions: Statistics (5), Scientific Computing (3), and Mathematics (10). We also have one adjunct Professor. The department is active in both teaching and research.  Many of our faculty members have been serving editorial board and/or chief-editor of a number of international prestigious mathematical and statistical journals. The department has also successfully organized several important international conferences in the mathematical and statistical sciences. The student body of our department is currently composed of 233 undergraduates, 62 M.S. and 19 Ph.D. students.  Since 2012, Man-Duen Choi, a professor of University of Toronto and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, has joined us as an honorary chair professor.

 

The major areas of our departmental research include nonlinear analysis, differential equations and dynamical systems, combinatorial mathematics and algebra, probability theory and statistics, and scientific computing. The research performance of our department is brilliant; as a matter of fact, statistics show thatour department is one of the top mathematics departments among all Taiwan’s research institutions. The department attracts substantial internal and external research funds. Moreover, the department has an elite Research Group for Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization supported by Taiwan’s Strategic Top University Plan.

 

The department emphasizes both teaching and research. To better coordinate the research efforts, statistics, scientific computing and mathematics have been identified as our primary research areas:

 

The division of statistics concentrates on optimal design for regression, financial time series, and applied probability and biomedical statistics. The recent research work focuses on advanced determinant calculus of D-optimal design for weighted polynomial regressions, optimal designs for multi-response non-linear models, estimations of the integrated volatility ratio and online monitoring system for high frequency transaction data, some variations of two-person red-and-black game, and medical image analysis.

 

The division of scientific computation studies elliptic boundary value problems with singularity, transport problem, porous media, pattern recognition, polynomial system, matrix computation and computational finance, etc. Beside the traditional finite difference, finite element and finite volume methods, we also use Trefftz boundary method, method of fundamental solution, radial basis method, combined method and conservative schemes, etc. In addition, we have made deep investigation on the super convergence of numerical methods and effective condition numbers of a linear system.

 

The division of mathematics concentrates on combinatorial mathematics and algebra, differential equations and inverse problems, dynamic systems, nonlinear analysis, optimization, and applications to engineering, economics and finance.

 

Research Equipment

The Department hosts the center of mathematics library of National Science Council in Kaohsiung area. The collection of current and back issues of math journals and online e-journals are fairly complete. There are two computer labs for graduate and undergraduate students, five multi-media classrooms, and equipments for distance learning and video conferencing. The hardware and software for high-performance computing facility is established. Every graduate student is provided office space.

 

Education Objectives

Many of our students take a broad program which introduces them to various areas of mathematics and its applications. The various courses provide students with the mathematical, statistical and computational skills necessary to pursue advanced study, start a career in teaching or in the private and public sectors.
